Theater
lovers no longer have to drive to downtown Atlanta to get their fix of
comedy,
drama and musicals. The Southern Crescent boasts some half dozen theater companies
who offer a wide variety of performances, workshops and opportunities to perform
as well. As a matter of fact, the southside theater companies are giving Atlanta's
well-known houses a run for their money with a host of well-known shows and
something many companies crave---standing room only audiences.

NEWNAN
COMMUNITY THEATER COMPANY
The city of Newnan has been graced with some form of theater for more than 30 years, and Dale Lyles can claim to have been involved for nearly all of it. Lyles has been directing for 25 years and says the Newnan Community Theater Company is entering a new phase of productivity. Having moved from the Manget-Brannon Arts Center to its own home in downtown, NCTC has an ambitious future ahead. For more information on NCTC, call 770-683-NCTC, or check out the website at http://shenandoah.peachnet.edu/nctc. FAYETTE COMMUNITY THEATER Fayette Community Theater Inc., founded in 1981, is Fayette County's oldest and largest company. FCT enjoys the interaction of numerous talented volunteers both on stage and behind the scenes. Each year, FCT produces six quality productions geared toward classic family entertainment. FCT's past productions have included, "The Legend of Pocahontas", "Beauty And The Beast", "A Christmas Carol" and, in 1999, the haunting drama "Voices From The Titanic", which brought FCT to a new level of appeal for mature audiences. For information regarding acting classes, workshops or auditions, call Tammy Barton, Artistic Director at 770-599-0051, or e-mail MinMic111@aol.com. OFFSHOOT PRODUCTIONS Another of Fayette's thriving theater companies is the Peachtree City-based Offshoot Productions, which was the brainchild of professor and playwright Dr. Susan M. Steadman and Susan R. Dolan, a graphic designer and performer. Created in 1992, the company has since performed an eclectic range of shows including "The Glass Menagerie", "Going to See the Elephant", "What Doesn't Kill Me...", and "The Belle of Amhurst." For more details, contact Offshoot at (770) 631-2362, or e-mail offshootpr@aol.com. SOUTHSIDE THEATER GUILD Without a doubt, the grand dame of companies is Fairburn's Southside Theater Guild, which has been organized for nearly 27 years. Located on Campbellton Street in the historic downtown area, STG occupies what was once Fairburn's movie theater. When the company first began its productions, the building had most recently been a roller skating rink, so volunteers built a stage on the concrete floor and brought in folding chairs. For more information, call the theater at (770) 969-0956 or visit their web site at http://www.stgplays.com. In addition to these theater companies, there is also active theater in Henry and Clayton counties, offering shows that range from children's musicals to hard-hitting adult dramas. There is no shortage of quality theater entertainment in the Southern Crescent. |
